Description

Levelled earthwork and cropmark remains of medieval or post medieval ridge and furrow around the village at Stoke Hammond can be seen on lidar images and aerial photographs centred at SP 8836 2958. Within the ridge and furrow are the earthwork remains of plough headlands and field boundaries which are better preserved to the north of the area. Within the ridge and furrow immediately north-west [north east] of the modern village is a ditch or drain which post dates the ridge and furrow. Post-war development has obscured; possibly destroyed a number of fields of ridge and furrow recorded from RAF photographs taken in 1946 (1).
