Description
Aerial survey at Stoke Hammond has revealed the levelled earthwork and cropmark remains of a large post medieval gravel extraction pit on a gravel island, close to the Grand Union Canal at SP 8867 2954. At its longest point, it meaures c.159 metres with its southern end c.100 metres in width. After 100 metres the northern end of the quarry begins to taper to c.16 metres in with. Other nearby possible small extraction pits were also visible dispursed across the same field. Cropmarks of post medieval ridge and furrow (Monument number: 1573864) appear to cross the pit suggesting the quarry must have been disused and filled in prior to the phase of cultivation which gave rise to this ridge and furrow. These features were mapped from aerial photographs by English Heritage (1).
