Description

An irregular anomaly identified by geophysical survey carried out in September 2022 by Headland Archaeology in advance of proposed residential development (B2).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out in September and October 2023 by Oxford Archaeology found a large spread of charcoal and burnt stone In Trench 29, at least 6.8m wide and extending 20m along a broadly N-S aligned depression and interpretted as a possible burnt mound. An environmental sample taken from the layer produced poorly preserved cereal grains, a flint bladelet, and a fragment of roundwood charcoal was carbon dated to the middle Bronze Age, with a date of 1610-1430 BC. Overlying the charcoal deposit was a possible buried soil 0.15m thick, sealed by approximately 1m of colluvium and ploughsoil. See report for detail (B3).
