Description

Dimensions - Length 0100 m Width 0060
Plan Form - SUBRECTANGULAR
ACCORDING TO LOCAL INFORMATION RELATED TO RWG, DEPRESSION AT NGR WAS FISHPOND DUG IN 19 CENTURY (1) A large rectangular pond is shown in the SE corner of the field, with a large fenced marshy area to the north roughly corresponding with depression shown on modern mapping (2).

A probable post-medieval pond is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 540 metres WSW of Cowpasture Farm and centred at SP 83303 30212, a cleaver shaped pond is about 183 metres N-S and up to 73 metres W-E at its widest point, covering an area of about 8,289 square metres. At the north end of the feature is a rectangular earthwork mound about 35 x 9 metres, with the long side against the pond, whose function is unclear but appears associated. By the 1940s the feature dies not appear to be holding water. The pond feature has been cut into a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the pond’s original extent has been much reduced (3-6).
