Description

An Early Iron Age pot was discovered some years ago by Mr J G Marsden, in a gravel pit at Lent Rise (SU 9281), where several fragments had been unearthed by workmen removing top-soil. On being united the sherds showed that the pot had been a hand-made, built-up vessel, 7 in in diameter at the slightly rounded rim and 8 1/4 in at the shoulder which is ornamented with finger nail impressions. The smooth and fairly hard ware contains no grit. It is well fired and in colour is brownish-red outside and inside. (1)
