Description
A Saxon spearhead of iron with a broken socket was found, November, 1936, in the river Thames on the site of the ancient ford south of Babham Ferry, Cookham. It is now in the
possession of Price-Jones (B1).
Babham Ferry is another name for that called My Lady Ferry on O.S. 6". The ancient ford was about 200 yards south of the ferry (b3). Sited from above information to area centred SU 908847. Mr. Price-Jones is now dead and his collection dispersed. The spearhead possibly went to Maidenhead Museum, itself now defunct but with some of the collection going to Reading Museum.
There are several Saxon spear-heads in Reading Museum, but there are no records concerning them and their provenance is not known. (2)
