Description

A medieval field boundary bank and ditch is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within Windmillhill Plantation and centred at SP 473491 215857, the linear earthworks bank is up to 9 metres wide extends NW-SE for about 310 metres. It is flanked by a ditch that may also have served as a trackway. The plantation is shown on the 1st Edition OS map dated to the early 1880s, but the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing (Tring) shows no plantation at that time, but a field boundary that matches the course of the bank visible on remote sensing data within the later plantation (1).
