Description

A U-shaped ditched enclosure of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthwork and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located adjacent a watercourse immediately S of the deserted medieval settlement of Quarrendon III (Brookend) and centred at SP 78717 17469, a ditch up to 9 metres wide forms a three sided enclosure, the fourth side formed by the sinuous watercourse. The ENE facing side of the ditch is about 70 metres NNW-SSE, turning 90 degrees WSW for about 92 metres and turning 90 degrees again NNW for 57 metres. It encloses an internal subrectangular area about 74 x 62 metres at its widest points. The ditch appears to underlie a block of medieval /post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. On recent remote sensing data the earthwork remains visible (1-2).
