Description
A circular mound of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 390 metres ENE of Putlowes and centred at SP 78549 15264, a circular mound is about 18 metres in diameter. On aerial photographs taken in 1947, a crescent arc of bounding ditch up to 2 metres wide extends around the east facing side for 20 metres, but this has been levelled in the post-war period. The mound and sit within a block of medieval/post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks that was extant in 1947 but which has also been plough levelled in the post-war period In the 1947 images it is difficult to determine whether the mound sits on top of or beneath the ridge and furrow, so cannot confidently be interpreted as pre-dating or post-dating it. On recent remote sensing data, the mound remains extant but appears to have been spread somewhat by post-war ploughing (1-2).
