Description

Excavation by Archaeological Research Services Ltd in June-July 2024 in advance of construction of a swimming pool found two early post-medieval pits at the rear of the back garden. The first pit was thought to be late 16th century in date and contained domestic waste, ceramic building material and a skeleton of an old dog. The second pit was early 18th century in date and contained demolition rubble (roof tile and bricks) as well as abraded pottery and other domestic and agricultural waste. The demolition material may have been related to changes to the frontage building in about this period. A made ground layer 0.22m thick sealed the pits, and it appears there was landscaping at the site, possibly contemporary with construction of the outbuildings. Cutting the made ground layer were two 18th or 19th century pits. Residual Iron Age pottery sherds were also recovered from the two earlier pits. See report for detail (B3).
