Monument record 1572400000 - South of Aylesbury Road, Aston Clinton

Evaluation trial trenching by Foundation Archaeology carried out in June 2027 in advance of proposed residential development identified two shalllow ditches in Trench 11 with small numbers of Roman pottery and ceramic building materials (tile?) in the fills. The longer ditch was aligned NE-SW, was at least 2.93m long, 0.98m wide and 0.12m deep, with sloping sides and a flat base. The other ditch was aligned NW-SE, was at least 0.8m long, 0.7m wide and 0.16m deep, with sloping sides, a rounded base and a terminal at the NW end. Interpreted as field bundary ditches. Subsequent excavation in November 2017 by Thames Valley Archaeological Services suggested that the ditches in Area A were probably modern, and that the Roman pottery and tile found in the evaluation were residual. In Area B a shallow NW-SE aligned ditch, at least 17m long, 1.05m wide and 0.36m deep, with variably sloping sides and a relatively flat base. Finds of 1st to 2nd century Roman pottery were recovered from the fill. See report for detail (B2).
