Monument record 1572300000 - South of Aylesbury Road, Aston Clinton

Evaluation trial trenching by Foundation Archaeology carried out in June 2027 in advance of proposed residential development identified a shallow ditch in Trench 8 with fragments of animal bone and Middle Bronze Age pottery in the lower and upper fills. The ditch was aligned N-S, was at least 2m long, 1.28m wide and 0.44m deep, with asymetrically sloping sides and a rounded base. See report for detail (B1).
Subsequent excavation in November 2017 by Thames Valley Archaeological Services confirmed the evaluation results and established that the ditch was at least 11m long, 1.16m wide and 0.3m deep, with a terminal at the south end. Further Middle Bronze Age pottery and animal bone fragments were recovered from the fill. It wasn't possible to determine if the ditch was a part of an enclosure or a boundary ditch, but the pottery suggests a nearby settlement. An undated posthole 0.54m in diameter and 0.08m deep was found to the east of the ditch. See report for detail (B2).
