Description

1964-6 by A Hodson Archard. Cruciform with central tower. Brick and very plain except for the relief of St Michael on the gable wall (by Joseph Cribb, former apprentice to Eric Gill) and an arcade of flattened arches, screening the entrance from the street. Similar arches at the crossing and for the passage-aisle arcades (B1).
St Michael's Mission Church was established in 1920, next to the Free Church, on Sycamore Road. This temporary building was set back from the road and was designed to become a church hall as soon as a new church could be built. With no sign of a permanent building, another church hall was built in front of the Mission Church in 1927. In fact these two temporary buildigs survived until the 1960s and it wasn't until 1966 that a purpose-built St Michael's Church was opened (B2).
The Mission Church was built by Jesse Mead of Chesham to a design by Mr Harrison. St Michael and All Angels, built by H J & A Wright of Great Missenden, designed by A Hodson Archard and costing £56,000, was dedicated on 17th September 1966 (B3).
Photos in 1925, and about 1946 (B4).
