- NONCONFORMIST CHURCH (Built 1960-1962, 20th Century - 1900 AD to 1999 AD)
Description
1960-2 by Farquharson, McMorran & Whitby. More interesting than many Non-conformist churches of this date and, in its restrained interpretation of traditional forms, characteristic of these architects. A well-balanced arrangement of openings (door arch and bell louvres in the tower, a clerestory with timber brises-soleil like mullions along the nave) in large expances of buff brick. At the back a huge single sweep of slate roof over nave and halls. Fittings by the architects (B1).
The present inter-denominational Free Church was built and opened in 1962, replacing an earlier church (designed by John Harold Kennard) at Sycamore Corner built in 1911 and demolished in 1963 (B2-3).
