Description

Probable post-medieval terraces, platforms and boundaries are visible on historic aerial photograph and remote sensing data as earthworks at Ascott Home Farm and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located immediately adjacent Ascott Home Farm and centred at SP 89867 23056, three contiguous small, subrectangular terraces extend SW downslope between the farm and Grimstone’s Furze: 25 x 15 metres, 20 x 13 metres and 11 x 12 metres. SW of this is a subcircular hollow of uncertain function. Bordering these features to the W and E sides are two linear ditches 1.5-2 metres wide, aligned SSW-NNE. A further interconnected ditch extends WNW towards Grimstone’s Furze. The farm is not present on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing but is recorded on the 1884 dated OS 1st Edition map. Then called Ascott Farm, there is no evidence for the terraced platforms at that time, so they might date to the mid-19th century. On aerial photographs taken in 2015, the features are still visible (1-5).
