Monument record MBC48677 - Network of roads east of Lower Winchendon, Nether Winchendon

A network of roads of probable medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located east of Lower Winchendon, Nether Winchendon and centred at SP 74045 12330. Two roads run west-east away from the settlement at Nether Winchendon towards the parish boundary with upper Winchendon. A third runs north-south and joins them at their eastern end; this also has, at its southern end, a subrectangular fishpond close to the river, 620m west of another very similar feature (see MBC11111). The north-south road probably continues further north but was not clear enough to map due to a heavily wooded field boundary. A probable field boundary also appears to join this road (see MBC48675). The northern east-west road appears on aerial photographs and lidar visualisations as a long sinuous ridge forming a field boundary. The southern is visible as parallel ditches with some raised areas at the eastern end, possibly because of softer ground. There is a record of a Roman road (see MBC6018) which could cross this area, but the form of the earthwork mapped here is more typical of a medieval furlong boundary which were often used as trackways to access open fields.
