Monument record MBC48658 - Road from Nether Winchendon to join Cannon's Hill, Nether Winchendon

A hollow way of probable medieval date is/are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located between Nether Winchendon and Cannon’s Hill, Nether Winchendon, and centred at SP 72589 12139. The course of a sinuous hollow way can be seen fitting in between earthworks of ridge and furrow field systems on photographs from the 1940s. No road shows on any historic mapping available to this project and no recorded field names available to the project indicate the presence of a road or hollow way. The footpaths shown on historic mapping are very straight and none of them follow this route but one does join Cannon’s Hill, close to where this hollow way would have, and may be a result of changes in land ownership at Lower Winchendon at the Dissolution or afterwards. Land use is arable by 1994 and this continues in more recent aerial photographs; cropmarks of the hollow way can be seen in some recent years. (1-6)
