- WATER CHANNEL (Medieval to Post-Medieval - 1066 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
A drainage ditch or water channel of medieval/post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 400m east of the site of Motley Abbey, Haddenham, and centred at SP 71997 09144. This channel leaves the River Thame on a meander bend and joins up with a further ditch/channel that is shown on historic mapping, and therefore not mapped as part of this project, which continues south west to rejoin the river further downstream. The underlying solid geology is Kimmeridge Clay Mudstones overlain by Superficial Deposits of Alluvium, on the floodplain of the river, where soils are heavier. (1-2)
