Description

Ridge and furrow field systems of medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within the parish of Long Crendon and centred at SP 71101 09180. Long Crendon is situated on the edge of the project area and only a small area is included in the mapping; the earthworks that were mapped were already affected by ploughing by the 1940s and only remain as earthworks which are less well defined or in irregular shaped fields where the use of modern machinery is not easy or possible. In common with other areas of the project cropmarks of earlier features were recorded in ‘gaps’ in the ridge and furrow field systems (see MBC48555). Modern land use is mainly arable and the underlying geology is mixed with Kimmeridge Clay Formation Mudstones and Siltstones, where soils are heavier, as well as Portland Stone Limestone and Purbeck Group Limestone, where soils are lighter. The earthworks recorded in this project are on the heavier soils.
