- SHRUNKEN VILLAGE (Medieval to Post-Medieval - 1066 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
An area of possible shrunken settlement of medieval/post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on the south west side of the road through Ford, south of the watercourse, and centred at SP 77617 09317. The linear earthworks would create long narrow parcels along the road and they are parallel to field and parcel boundaries visible on historic mapping. The platforms are present close to the road which runs almost parallel to the watercourse through Ford. The ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing of Aylesbury shows buildings close to this location but this map is not good for detail. Historic mapping shows no buildings at these locations and modern land use is pasture and an equestrian establishment, which has removed some of the earthworks. The underlying solid geology is Gault Formation Mudstone which results in heavier soils and this seems to have influenced the features that are visible. (1-4)
