Description

Ridge and furrow field systems of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within the parish of Aston Sandford and centred at SP 476133 208010. Only the northernmost corner of the parish of Aston Sandford lies inside the project area and the remains of ridge and furrow field systems are on the north side of the deserted settlement of Aston Sandford. The recorded earthworks north of the church fit with what is recorded as common pasture and village green recorded by Peter Gulland. Plough headlands and trackways or field boundaries remain as low earthworks but modern arable land use has levelled the earthworks recorded further away from the shrunken settlement near the church and the Manor House. The majority of the parish is outside the project area and was not included in any mapping. (1-7
