Description
A bronze sword, classified as "early Hallstatt" from 8-600 B.C., was dredged from the river Thames, 19th November, 1936, close to "Hatch R, opposite Messrs. Messum's boat-house at Bray, but only 50 ft. out from the tow-path on the opposite or Bucks side of the river ..". After examination at the B.M. it was given by the Thames Conservancy Board to the retiring chairman, Lord Desborough, in 1937, and is at Taplow Court. Lord Desborough is dead and the present whereabouts of the sword were not ascertained (B3).
Messrs' Messum's boathouse is that shown on OS 6" at SU 9038 7971. If the given location descripton is exact, it puts the find spot in area SU 9038 7979. (B4).
