Description

A circular mound of probable 20th century is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 125 metres SW of Fieldside Farm and centred at SP 73685 19780, a slightly elongated ovoid mound is about 29 metres N-S and 17 metres W-E at its widest point. It is sited within a block of medieval/post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks and appears to overlie it. Aerial photographs taken in 1947 shows a pale coloured (and so likely fresh) mound of material at this location. It seems most likely that this earthwork is therefore agricultural in origin from the early/mid-20th century. However, its morphology when viewed on remote sensing data might suggest an earthwork of older archaeological origin, such as a medieval pillow mound or even earlier funerary mound and so this entry has been created to dispel possible misinterpretation (1-3).
