Description

An Iron Age and/or Roman ditched enclosure is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields just to the SE of Westlington and centred at SP 76607 10190, a curving ditch up to 2.3 metres wide describes a ‘figure 2’ shape on its side. Within the curve of the ‘2’ is a possible ring ditch, with part connected to the main ditch. This may possibly represent the presence of a roundhouse as similar accreted enclosures were recorded on the claylands in Bedfordshire. Several pits are scattered around the features that may be associated (1).

Cropmark of part of a possible ditched enclosure of uncertain date visible on aerial photographs at SP 7662 1021. The site appears as a ditch with a right-angled bend which then curves outwards before changing direction again by 90 degrees. It is possible that this part of an enclosure. There are a number of small pits which may be archaeological and the cropmark remains of medieval ridge and furrow can be seen throughout the field which is marked by the underlying geology (2).
