Description

Medieval and/or post medieval and 20th century linear field boundaries are visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields immediately W of Putlowes and centred at SP 77983 15061, a palimpsest of intersecting linear boundary ditches document the changes to the field systems around Putlowes. The 20th century linear field boundary and a parallel land drain are recorded on OS map editions, but have since been levelled as part of the HS2 railway development corridor. The earlier medieval and/or post medieval field boundaries are not documented on OS map editions, but have also been levelled by the same infrastructural upgrade scheme. Still visible on aerial photographs taken in 2020, On aerial photographs taken in 2023, the HS2 construction work is underway and none of the earthworks remain visible (1-3).
