Description

A L-shaped ditched enclosure of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs as an earthwork and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 840 metres NNE of Haydon Hill Farm and centred at SP 479688 214904, a L-shaped ditch varies between 2 and 5 metres wide, with the long side of the ā€˜L’ being about 120 metres WNW-ESE and the shorter arm of the ā€˜L’ at its ESE end turning NNE for 73 metres. The function of this earthwork is unclear, as is its origin. However, as this feature is visible in the corner of a field as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1947, it might point to a probable medieval and/or post medieval date. It is possible that this is associated with the English Civil War actions around Aylesbury and a nearby civil war breastwork. On aerial photographs taken in 1986, the site is no longer visible, having been covered by residential housing (1-2).
