Description

A cluster of conjoined subrectangular ditched enclosures are visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field immediately NE of Wormstone Farm and centred at SP 475148 216418, a cluster of at least three conjoined subrectangular ditched enclosures enclose internal areas about 19 x 22 metres, 21 x 18.5 metres, 18 x 19 metres at their widest points Further very fragmentary ditch sections extending from these suggest further possible enclosures. A small subcircular pit about 3 metres in diameter lies immediately outside the W.facing enclosure. To the E of these features is the curving ditch of a medieval and/or post medieval field boundary still extant on the 1st Edition OS map dated to the 1880s. It has been mapped to clarify the interpretation of the cropmarks. About 40 metres E of the enclosures and to the E of the curving medieval field boundary is a cluster of subcircular pits or maculae ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 metres in diameter. It is unclear whether there is an association with the ditched enclosures, or whether these are geological in origin (1).

Cropmarks of a group of conjoined rectililinear enclosures, possibly the remians of a later prehistoric or Roman settlement visible on aerial photographs centred at SP7514 1640. The cropmarks of a former field boundary present on the 1st edition OS map can be seen curving around the north and eastern sides of the enclosures. Immediately to the east of this former boundary are the cropmark traces of numerous small pits and the cropmark remains of levelled medieval ridge and furrow. The course of the Roman road -Akeman Street - is noted passing to the north of this site (2).
