Description
A long mound of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field at the base of the slope between Conduit Hill and Quainton Hill and centred at SP 474658 221527, the long mound has two parallel long sides with rounded ends, giving it a pill-shape. It is about 55.7 metres long aligned WNW-ESE and 21 metres wide, aligned SSW-NNE. The earthwork mound underlies a block of extant ridge and furrow cultivations earthworks, suggesting an earlier date. It is oriented with long sides perpendicular to the ridge and furrow earthworks going up the S facing slop of Conduit Hill; although it does not give the appearance of a plough headland, it may be. It is also possible that the earthwork mound is a prehistoric funerary monument and has the morphology of a Neolithic long barrow, though its location at the base of a hillslope is uncharacteristic (1-3).
