Description
A mound of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field adjacent Carters Lane at the base of the E slope of Woad Hill and centred at SP 76144 21212, a C-shaped bank up to 9 metres wide encloses a circular mound about 8 metres in diameter. It is possibly a medieval and/or post medieval windmill mound, though this is conjectural as it lies at the base of a hill, which might suggest an alternative function. It does not overlie or underlie medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks so dating is problematic. It may have been a post medieval pond, or equally a prehistoric burial mound. Visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1947, recent remote sensing data suggests it has been bisected and reshaped into two irregularly shaped mounds in the post-war period (1-2).
