Monument record MBC48581 - MEDIEVAL/POST MEDIEVAL MOAT, MANOR FARM

A possible medieval moat is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 310 metres SW of Manor Farm and centred at SP 76396 21938, a trapezoidal ditch varies in width from 3 to 13 metres. The N and W facing sides have survived as a water filled ditch, whereas the S and E facing sides are mostly levelled and only very narrow and slight depressions at the base of a slope. The N side is about 93 metres long and up to 13 metres wide, aligned WSW-ENE: the W side is about 90 metres long and up to 12 metres wide, aligned NW-SE: the S side is fragmentary but about 60 metres long and up to 4.5 metres wide, aligned WSW-ENE: the E side is about 76 metres long and up to 2.5 metres wide, aligned N-S. Narrow earthwork banks flank the sides of the N and W facing sides. On aerial photographs taken in 2021 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain extant (1-3).
