Description
A trapezoidal shaped pit of uncertain date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 415 metres E of Oving House and centred at SP 78696 21170, a trapezoid shaped depression in the ground suggests either past mineral or aggregate extraction, a brickfield or even a former pond. The feature sits in a field where ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks is absent Aerial photographs taken in 1976 show a very precisely cut outline of a trapezium in the soil covering about 4,534 square metres. The sides measure: the N facing side is 87 metres aligned WSW-ENE: the E facing side is 59 metres aligned N-S: the S facing side is 71 metres aligned WSW-ENE: the W facing side is 55 metres aligned NNW-SSE. No historic maps available to the project dating back to 1813 show any features at this location. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the feature remain extant (1-3).
