Description

Four circular mounds of uncertain date and function is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 160 metres SW of Lower Farm and centred at SP 76723 20186, 2 pairs of roughly circular earthwork mounds are sited almost parallel to each other. The four mounds are centred at SP 76677 20180, 14.1 metres in diameter: SP 76745 20219, 14.7 metres in diameter: SP 76760 20196, 13 metres in diameter: and SP 76707 20152, 13.5 metres in diameter. All four mounds are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947 and appear to underlie a block of medieval/post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. On recent remote sensing data, the mounds are still visible under the ridge and furrow, despite substantial levelling of both by post-war ploughing regimes. The function and date of these mounds is unclear (1-2).
