Monument record MBC48575 - MEDIEVAL / POST MEDIEVAL FIELD SYSTEMS, OVING PARISH

Medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across the Oving parish, contiguous blocks of the ridge and furrow cultivation are centred around Oving village, with further clusters in the south and north of the parish. A parish of 990 acres, streams flank the east and west of Oving, meeting at the parish’s northern tip. Smaller springs rise in the higher land in the centre of the parish, where oving village sits on a hill about 150 metres ASL. Pasture is historically important in the parish, indicated by the survival of medieval cultivation earthworks. On aerial photographs taken in 2021 and recent remote sensing data, about ninety percent of the cultivation blocks remain visible, the remainder having been plough levelled by post-war agricultural regimes (1-8).
