Monument record MBC48569 - Ridge and furrow field systems in the parish of Coldharbour, Aylesbury

Remains of ridge and furrow field systems of medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in the parish of Coldharbour, Aylesbury, and centred at SP 80206 13544. The whole area was redeveloped after 1994 as Coldharbour, a separate parish in Aylesbury, and any remaining earthworks or cropmarks were removed at this time. (1-3)

Seven blocks of contiguous medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in the NW corner of Coldharbour parish and focused around Coldharbour Farm, the blocks of cultivation earthworks are part of a much more extensive contiguous swathe that extends across Stone parish immediately to the W. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, only one quarter of the ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks visible on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s remain extant. The remainder have been plough-levelled by post-war agricultural regimes (4-7).
