Description

A ring ditch and linear features of uncertain date are visible on historic aerial photographs as extant cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 250m west of Bridgefoot Farmhouse, Ford, Dinton-with-Ford and Upton, and centred at SP 77393 09641. Cropmarks of a ring ditch, measuring approximately 22m in diameter, crossed by a linear feature of a possible boundary ditch, are visible on aerial photographs. Further linear features, possible boundaries or field boundaries, can be seen close to the ring ditch; these do not fit or align with any boundaries shown on modern or historical mapping. These are possibly later than the ring ditch. Also visible are small irregular shaped/subcircular maculae, which may be pits associated with past human activity at the site, measuring between 1m and 3m across; not all of these were clear enough to be mapped or may be geological in origin. Photographs from the 1940s and 50s show a plough levelled field with no remains of ridge and furrow earthworks which are visible in surrounding fields; this is in common with other areas where cropmarks were mapped as part this project. Geological features can also be seen as cropmarks across the site (1-5).

Cropmarks of a single large ring ditch (possibly a Bronze Age round barrow), faint traces of linear ditches and numerous pits, many of which appear square or rectilinear in form (6).
