  • WATER MEADOW (Medieval to Post-Medieval - 1066 AD to 1798 AD)

Description

A water meadow with carrier channel and a boundary bank medieval/post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 600m south of the site of Notley Abbey, Haddenham, and centred at SP 71385 08613. The straight parallel ditches of the water meadow are visible on the east side of the River Thame, which forms the boundary between the parishes of Long Crendon and Haddenham. The water meadow is not clear on the 1940s aerial photographs because of the lighting conditions and the clarity of the image. The water channel to bring the water from the river has been altered and is visible crossing the water meadow ditches on lidar visualisations. No trace of any earthworks is visible to the north of the low boundary bank at the northern end of the water meadow. Field name recorded in 1881 is West Mead and it lies on the floodplain on the River Thame on Superficial Deposits of Alluvium and Head, overlying solid geology of Kimmeridge Clay. (1-3)
