Description
Geophysical survey carried out by Magnitude Surveys in December 2016 did not identify any anomalies of possible or probable archaeological origin. See report for detail (B3).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Thames Valley Archaeological Services in March and April 2025 in advance of residential development found a cluster of undated pits in trenches 23 and 29, with a large rectangular post-medieval quarry pit 4.1m long, 2.25m wide and 0.65m deep, identified in trench 29. A shallow ditch 0.6m wide in trench 42 was tentatively dated to the Medieval period (based on a single shed of late 11th century-mid 13th century pottery) and cut one of three shallow parallel gullies which could all therefore be earlier in date. In trench 13 an undated ditch 1.45m wide and 0.35m deep, on a different orientation to most other features and might be of a different date, though no continuation of it was found in the adjacent trenches 10 or 12. Similarly a differently orientated undated WSW-ENE aligned shallow ditch, 0.72m wide and 0.2m deep was identified running through trenches 16, 26 and 27, and is perhaps late Medieval or post-medieval in date. The remains of post-medieval plough furrows aligned NE-SW were widespread across the site, identified in trenches 1, 3, 9-16, 19-20, 25-26, 31-34, 36, 41 and 43. See report for detail (B4).
