Description

An alignment of three earthwork mounds of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 835 metres W of Musk Hill Farm and centred at SP 71518 13056, three circular mounds, each about 9 metres in diameter and about 94 and 60 metres apart from the centre. The mounds are sited on top of the same medieval cultivation ridge aligned WNW-ESE over 176 metres, which is parallel with the lane some 65 metres to the SW. The fact that the earthwork mounds sit atop the medieval cultivation suggests a post medieval or later date, but the function is entirely unclear. Clearly visible on aerial photographs taken in 1943, on aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data the circular earthworks remain though appear slightly degraded (1-3).
