Description

Medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across the north half of Upper Winchendon parish, the ridge and furrow cultivation is contiguous except for the flood meadows adjacent the meandering watercourse that flanks the west edge of the parish. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, about two thirds of the cultivation blocks remain visible, the remainder having been plough levelled by post-war agricultural regimes (1-12).

Medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow blocks, remnants of the former common open field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across Upper Winchendon parish, the ridge and furrow is almost contiguous except around Upper Winchendon and Mainshill Farm. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, about half of the parish's ridge and furrow blocks remain extant (13-17).
