Description

An extractive pit of probable post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located south side of Aylesbury Road, Bierton, and centred at SP 83425 14983. An irregular shaped extractive pit, partly infilled, is visible as rounded earthworks on aerial photographs in 1943 and can still be seen on lidar visualisations. This pit is to the rear of houses along the Aylesbury Road in pasture fields. The underlying solid geology is Portland Stone and the pit may have been used for stone extraction for the construction of the moat or the church nearby. (1-2)
