Description

Iron Age and/or Roman ditched enclosures is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields about 460 metres ENE of Lower Blackgrove Farm and centred at SP 76988 17453, a trapezoidal shaped ditched enclosure is about 44.5 x 68.5 metres at its widest points. On its W facing side is a parallel ditch suggesting it may have been a double ditched enclosure. Extending from the ESE facing side are interconnected but ditches that form at least seven further incomplete rectangular ditched enclosures. Some 111 metres to the SE is a curving half-arc ditch about 21.5 metres in diameter that may be a further enclosure along with three isolated linear ditch sections whose function is unclear (1).
