Description
Sections of a medieval and/or post medieval road or trackway is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located immediately N of the disused windmill in Quainton and centred at SP 74717 20423, a ditch about 7 metres wide extends in a curve for 305 metres from SSW to W. With a break of 80 metres the road recommences, with a sinuous section extending 174 metres from ESE to W. A junction heading N to Simber Hill is at the ESE end. The 1813 dated Ordnance Surveyors Drawing depicts the road linking at right angles to another road extending between Grange Hill and the east side of Quainton. These features are no longer recorded on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS maps, though it remains as an earthwork running between blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation (1-3).
