Description

A possible Second World War bomb crater is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within Home Wood and centred at SP 71566 24477, a circular hollow is about 9.2 metres in diameter and has an earthwork lip along an arc on its W to SE facing side. This is one of two possible bomb craters within the wood, the other being centred some 85 metres to the SW. Due to historic tree canopy cover, no evidence of the crater is visible on available historic aerial photographs. It interpretation as a possible bomb crater is base upon the circular morphology and also the earthwork rim that may represent upcast soil from the bomb explosion (1).
