Description

A possible post medieval windmill mound is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on top of a hill about 120 metres W of Windmillhill Farm and centred at SP 73338 15536, a low irregularly shaped earthwork mound about 55 metres NNW-SSE and 38.5 metres SW-NE covers an area about 1,670 square metres. It is possible that this low earthwork mound represent the plough spreading of material from a historically smaller but larger mound during the 19th and early 20th centuries as no large mound is visible on available historic aerial photographs taken in the 1940s-1960s, suggesting the plough levelling occurred before that. On aerial photographs taken in 2020 and recent remote sensing data, the earthwork mound is visible (1-7).
