Description

A Second World War army camp for No. 9 Petrol Depot (Royal Army Service Corps) Waddesdon is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields W of Warmstone Lane and centred at SP 74781 16730, the camp comprises 109 rectangular military buildings of various sizes, accessed by an interconnected road and path network. By 1949, 54 of these buildings have been demolished, with many of the concrete building platforms still visible. Between 1949 and 1952, 17 more buildings are demolished and between 1952 and 1961 a further 41 buildings are removed along with the pathway and road system. By 1975 only one building remains visible, the former army camp now being the site of a newly constructed residential housing estate and that final building has been demolished by 2003 (1-7).
The Park at Waddesdon was requisitioned on the 17th September 1941 for use as a military fuel storage depot. The accommodation camp had a main gate and sentry box off Warmestone Road in Budd's Piece. Several hundred troops, mainly Royal Pioneer Corps, were stationed at Waddesdon Camp. The camp was closed at the end of the war, before being re-staffed by a unit of the Free Polish Army from 1945. They left around 1946 and civilian squatters moved in (B8).
