Description

A Second World War Womens Auxiliary Air Force (W.A.A.F.) accommodation camp Site No 14 (RAF Wescott) is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields east of Ashendon Lane, SE of Wescott Farm and centred at SP 72191 16525, the W.A.A.F. accommodation camp comprised an assortment of rectangular military buildings that ranged in size from 6 X 5 metres to 46 x 20 metres, accessed by a road and linked by a network of linear paths. At the entrance to the camp is a sentry box (RAF picket post), that leads to the officers mess and quarters, sergeants mess and quarters, airmwomens dining room (mess) and barracks, a hairdressers shop, bath house and decontamination building, sick quarters, airwomens institute and NAAFI quarters, ablution and latrine blocks, fuel store, seven brick-built and earth-bermed open-topped blast shelters, along with five earth covered air raid shelters. By 1947 some of the blast shelters have been dismantled and levelled. Between 1947 and 1952, four further rectangular buildings of uncertain function are constructed in the camp. Between 1952 and 1961 many more of the camp’s buildings are demolished. By 1976 the remainder of the buildings have been demolished along with many of the paths and a residential housing estate has been constructed on part of the former military camp. On aerial photographs taken in 2023, only the access road survives (1-9).
