Description

A Second World War Royal Air Force accommodation camp Site No 10 (RAF Wescott) is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604).Located in fields S of Gypsy Bottom wood and centred at SP 71809 15321, the site comprises a cluster of rectangular military temporary brick-built buildings: a sentry box (RAF picket post) leads to officers quarters and latrine, sergeants quarters and latrine, airmens barracks and latrines, a fuel compound, church, library, three earth covered air raid shelters, all linked by a road and pathway network. By 1947, many of the camp’s buildings have been demolished. Between 1949 and 1961, almost all of the remaining buildings and pathways are demolished, though the concrete building platforms remain extant. By 1999 the air raid shelters are levelled and demolished along with the concrete platforms of former buildings and paths. On aerial photographs taken in 2023, all that remains of the chapel is a concrete base, though the central roadway and fuel compound also survive intact (1-9).
