Description

A Second World War Royal Air Force accommodation camp Site No 4 (RAF Wescott) is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within Gypsy Bottom woodland and centred at SP 71872 15549, a sentry box (RAF picket post) leads to a cluster of buildings that were officers quarters and latrines, sergeants quarters and latrines, airmens barracks and latrines, three earth covered air raid shelters (Stanton type?), all linked by a road and pathway network. Most of the camp buildings survive until between 1961 and 1999, when some of the airmens barracks and one of the officer quarters have been demolished. In subsequent years of available aerial photographs, the density of woodland cover makes it impossible to determine the fate of the remaining buildings and structures. On recent remote sensing data, one of the buried air raid shelters appears to survive as an earthwork, but the current condition of the remaining buildings remains uncertain (1-6).
