Monument record MBC47886 - Site of temporary buildings at the Tindal Hospital, Bierton Road, Aylesbury

Temporary buildings of World War II date are visible on historic aerial photographs as extant buildings and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on the north side of the site of Tindal Hospital, Bierton Road, Aylesbury, and centred at SP 82505 14577. Temporary huts for an Emergency Medical Scheme Hospital (EMS) were constructed to the north of the existing buildings at the site of the former workhouse in Aylesbury. A single building on this site, labelled Pest House (see MBC15032), is visible on the Epoch 1 Ordnance Survey Map and the temporary huts were constructed around this. EMS hospitals were a network of free hospitals set up from June 1938 in anticipation of the mass civilian casualties and in response to the disfunction of existing healthcare provision. The temporary buildings, with possible air raid shelters in between and a possible circular water tank to the south, were visible on aerial photographs available to the project from 1943 to 1961. By 2003 the whole site has been redeveloped for housing. (1-10)
