Monument record MBC47885 - Boundary ditches at the site of Walton Court Farm, Aylesbury

Boundary ditches of medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located south of Walton Street, Aylesbury, and centred at SP 82217 13220. Substantial boundary ditches forming subrectangular enclosures on the south side of Walton Street are visible in the 1940s and remain until the last part is removed by redevelopment in the 1970s. An L shaped earthwork is shown on historic mapping up to 1960 but the earthworks visible form the southern edge of two subrectangular enclosures measuring approximately 47m across with the southern boundary approximately 110m south of Walton Street. Excavations since 1973-4 record these ditches as medieval and a manorial enclosure and the ditches range from 3-8m in width. Aerial photographs taken in 1971 show a short length remains but the whole area has been redeveloped by 1978. (1-8)
